Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world, with food reason. This procedure uses minimally invasive technology to sculpt and recontour your body, giving you the shape, you desire.
Many people have areas of fat that simply do not respond to lifestyle measures such as exercise and dieting. Liposuction, or sometimes referred to as just lipo, removes these deposits to give a smoother appearance. In most cases, fat does not return once removed, leaving people with a permanently pleasing result. Although the results depend on your health, tone, and body weight, most people are pleased with their results.
Liposuction is used alone as well as in conjunction with surgical procedures such as tummy tucks and body lifts to get a dramatically improved body contour and more youthful shape.
Other procedures that liposuction is used in combination with include:
Liposuction Procedures
Almost every area of the body with fat can be treated with this cosmetic procedure. However, most people choose to use lipo to remove fat deposits in the following areas:
- Abdomen and stomach
- Back and flanks
- Buttocks
- Cheeks, chin, and face
- Hips and love handles
- Thighs, legs and knees
- Neck
- Upper arms
It should be noted that while you can remove stubborn fat from these parts of your body, this procedure should not be intended for weight loss.
Liposuction Patient 1: This patient wanted to get rid of stubborn fat deposits on her abdomen and flanks. After liposuction, she had a slim waist with a smooth, feminine contour.
How Is Liposuction Performed?
First, the area is numbed using local anesthesia. General anesthesia is also available for more extensive procedures or if the patient prefers. Then, tiny incisions are made in the area to be contoured. A thin metal tube called a cannula is inserted in these incisions. Using suction, fat cells are removed through the cannula. Dr. Shain Cuber has years of experience performing lipo procedures. Dr. Cuber is considered an expert plastic surgeon and has performed thousands of procedures with amazing results. The tiny incisions are then closed with skin adhesive, surgical tape, or a single small stitch.
Liposuction Recovery
Recovery is usually easy, requiring just a week. Most patients will need to wear a compression garment over the area to prevent swelling and to help the tissues to settle in a smooth shape. If extensive liposuction was performed, patients may initially have a drain, or inserted tube that allows fluid to drain from the area and reduces swelling. These drains are removed at a follow up visit days later.
Many patients are sore after the procedure. Some use pain medication to control the discomfort. Numbness is another common after effect, although this is usually temporary.
Liposuction Patient 2: This male patient in middle age wanted a more toned stomach. This procedure gave him a smooth and attractive result while reducing his pant size by four sizes.
Most patients return to work and normal activity in about a week. Your doctor will usually recommend that you avoid strenuous labor and exercise for a month to a month and a half.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
Liposuction is a great choice for both men and women in good health. Patients have the best results when they have already tried diet and exercise while still having stubborn fat deposits. Although people often have a dramatic change in size with lipo, it should not be used for weight loss. In fact, most people will have best results if they are within 30% of their target weight and merely need local treatment. In addition, patients have better results when they have firm skin and muscle in the area being treated.
Ultimately, there is only one way to find out if liposuction is right for you. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Jacono or one of his plastic surgery associates today. Your surgeon will help you understand the procedure as well as what you can expect from it.
